Closely associated with Kintail and the powerful Mackenzies of Seaforth, the Macraes became renowned for their service at Eilean Donan Castle and for the generations of soldiers, ministers, poets, estate officers and emigrants who carried the name far beyond the western Highlands.

Beginning with the origins of the Macrae name and the traditions surrounding the family's arrival in Kintail, the book follows figures such as Fionnla Dubh and Duncan Mòr na Tuagh before examining the Macraes' growing association with Eilean Donan. Readers will encounter the dramatic 1539 defence of the castle, the long conflict involving Glengarry, and the extraordinary career of the Reverend Farquhar Macrae, whose life united the worlds of the church, education, Highland politics and castle administration.

The story then moves into the turbulent seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Explore the Macraes during Scotland's civil wars, the Revolution of 1688, the Rising of 1715 and the devastating events of 1719, when Royal Navy forces attacked Eilean Donan and left the famous stronghold in ruins. The book also examines the clan's Jacobite memory and the losses suffered by Macrae families at Sheriffmuir and during later political upheaval.

But the history of Clan Macrae is much more than battles and castles. This volume explores the Gaelic language, poetry and oral traditions that preserved Macrae identity across generations. Special attention is given to the remarkable Fernaig Manuscript, compiled by Duncan Macrae during the political crisis of 1688–1693, and to the songs and experiences of Iain mac Mhurchaidh, John Macrae, whose journey from Kintail to North Carolina became part of the wider story of Highland emigration.

As Macrae families spread through Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and beyond, the meaning of clan identity changed. Genealogy, correspondence, tartan, family histories and heritage organisations helped descendants maintain connections with Kintail even when generations separated them from Scotland.

The final chapters follow the nineteenth- and twentieth-century revival of interest in Clan Macrae, the debates surrounding clan seniority and chiefship, and the extraordinary reconstruction of Eilean Donan Castle by John MacRae-Gilstrap and those who worked alongside him. The restored castle became one of Scotland's most recognisable landmarks and a powerful modern symbol of the Macrae connection with Kintail.

Inside This Book You'll Discover:

The Gaelic origins and early traditions of the Macrae name

Fionnla Dubh, Duncan Mòr na Tuagh and the early Macraes of Kintail

The Macraes' historic connection with Eilean Donan Castle

The dramatic defence of Eilean Donan in 1539

The Macrae role in the Glengarry feud

The remarkable life of the Reverend Farquhar Macrae

Clan Macrae during the Scottish civil wars and Jacobite era

The Macrae losses at Sheriffmuir in the Rising of 1715

The destruction of Eilean Donan during the Rising of 1719

The Fernaig Manuscript and the clan's Gaelic literary heritage

Macrae emigration to North America and other parts of the world

The development of Macrae tartan, genealogy and modern clan identity

The Macrae chiefship controversy and the 1909 proceedings

The twentieth-century reconstruction of Eilean Donan Castle

The continuing worldwide legacy of the Macrae name

Illustrated throughout with sixteen specially created historical scenes, this book brings the landscapes, people and defining moments of Macrae history to life.

Historical traditions are carefully distinguished from documented events, allowing readers to enjoy the famous stories of the clan while also understanding what the surviving evidence can—and cannot—establish.

Whether you bear the names Macrae, MacRae, McRae, are researching Scottish ancestry, have visited Eilean Donan and Kintail, or simply love the history of Scotland and the Highlands, The Complete History of Clan Macrae offers an extensive journey through centuries of family, conflict, culture and remembrance.

A richly detailed history for Macrae descendants, genealogists, Scottish history readers and anyone fascinated by the enduring story of the Highland clans.

Available as EPUB, KPF and PDF digital editions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0684/8115/5124/files/ChatGPT_Image_Sep_20_2026_11_05_52_PM.png?v=1789956364
