This image represents the recognized clansman’s badge of Clan Cunningham, a prominent lowland Scottish family historically centered in Ayrshire. While the clan chief owns the unique personal crest, members wear this stylized badge—composed of the chief’s crest and motto enclosed within a traditional strap-and-buckle garter—to demonstrate their allegiance.

At its center is a finely rendered unicorn’s head. This choice is deeply symbolic, as the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland, representing purity, innocence, and unyielding courage. Historically, the unicorn was depicted chained on the royal arms to represent the monarch’s power to tame an otherwise untamable beast. For Clan Cunningham, it embodies a proud, noble, and fiercely independent spirit.

The motto, "OVER FORK OVER," derived from the clan’s most famous legend. Tradition states that Malcolm, son of Friskin, assisted Prince Malcolm (later King Malcolm III Canmore) in escaping MacBeth’s soldiers. He hid the prince in a barn and covered him with hay using a shakefork (pitchfork), responding to the urgent command, "Over, fork over." The unicorn itself is also sometimes interpreted as an allusion to the ancient office of Master of the King's Stables.

Together, these elements form a powerful symbol of loyalty, resourcefulness, and fierce heritage for all Cunninghams.
