One descendant, Sir William Hay MacNaghten, would stand at the center of the catastrophic events in Kabul during the First Anglo-Afghan War.

Another became immortalized in Irish folklore as “Half-Hanged MacNaughton,” the condemned gentleman whose execution rope broke—only for him to make an extraordinary decision when offered the chance to escape.
