Uncover Five Centuries of Clan Campbell & West Highland Lineage in This Rare 1882 Privately Printed Memorial History

Originally printed in London in 1882 by Simmons & Botten strictly "for Subscribers and Private Circulation," Margaret Olympia Campbell's A Memorial History of the Campbells of Melfort, Argyllshire: Which Includes Records of the Different Highland and Other Families With Whom They Have Intermarried is one of the scarcest and most authoritative genealogical volumes ever compiled on the House of Argyll and its allied West Highland clans. Drawing directly from the 1768 manuscript genealogy of Archibald Campbell of Melfort, family Bibles, and private baronial charter chests, this monumental work traces thirteen generations of the Barony of Melfort in Nether Lorne alongside detailed histories and 18 full-page genealogical pedigree tables of the Highland and British families united with them by marriage.

Historical & Regional Overview

Branched off from the House of Lochow during the reign of King Robert II through Neill Campbell, 1st of Melfort (son of Sir Colin Campbell of Lochow and Margaret Drummond, sister of Queen Annabella Drummond), the Barony of Melfort encompassed the fertile glens and sea-lochs of Kilmelford, Kenmore, Fearnach, Ardanstur, and Lagganmore in Argyllshire. Across five centuries of Highland feuds, royal charters, and Jacobite risings, the Lairds of Melfort forged enduring marriage alliances with the foremost families of Argyll, Perthshire, and Inverness-shire—preserving vital genealogical links that bridge medieval clan manuscripts and modern parish registers.

For military and colonial historians, this volume is an indispensable biographical register of Highland officers who served across North America, the West Indies, India, the Peninsula, and Waterloo. Compiled by the youngest daughter of General Sir Colin Campbell, K.C.B. (1776–1847)—hero of Assaye, Talavera, Vittoria, and Waterloo, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia (1834–1840), and Governor of Ceylon—and niece of Vice-Admiral Sir Patrick Campbell, K.C.B. (1773–1841), the book records dozens of officers in the 42nd Royal Highlanders (Black Watch), 74th, 78th Ross-shire Buffs, 91st Argyllshire, and 92nd Gordon Highlanders, as well as branches who settled in Nova Scotia, Ontario, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
