Historical & Genealogical Overview
For centuries, Highland tradition and 17th-century Argyll seannachies represented the Clan-Iver of Glassary (Clann-Imheair-Ghlasairidh) as a cadet branch of the Clan Campbell. Drawing on the 1219 Abbey Rolls of Aberbrothoc, the Register of the Priory of St. Andrews, King John Baliol's 1292 Ordinance erecting the Sheriffdom of Lorn, and the Craignish Charter Chest, Principal Campbell proves that the MacIvers were an ancient, independent baronial race who fought alongside Alexander II in the 1221 subjugation of Argyll. Under their progenitor Iver Crom ("Conqueror of Cowal"), the clan held MacIver's Lairdship (Lergachonzie and Asknish), Finncharn Castle on Loch Awe, and the hereditary captaincy of Inveraray Castle, while their kinsmen settled across the Vale of Glassary and Cowal.
Beyond Argyllshire, this volume chronicles the dramatic migrations and military exploits of the scattered race of Iver: the 1375 battle of Beallach-na-broige in Ross-shire; the 1476 battle of Glenlyon against Stewart of Garth; the late-16th-century expedition of Kenneth Buey and Farquhar MacIver to Caithness, culminating in the 1680 victory at Altimarlach; the 1610 settlement of the Isle of Lewis under the Earls of Seaforth; and the 18th- and 19th-century diaspora to Liverpool, Nova Scotia (Pictou, Gut of Canso, St. Anne's, and Bras d'Or Lake in Cape Breton), Ontario, Montreal, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Victoria, Australia.
