Trace Your Clan MacLean & Colonial New England Roots from the Isle of Coll to Connecticut
Originally privately printed in Berkeley, California in 1905 by Mary McLean Hardy, A Brief History of the Ancestry and Posterity of Allan MacLean, 1715–1786, Vernon, Colony of Connecticut, New England, U.S.A. is one of the rarest transatlantic Scottish-American genealogies in existence. Drawing upon original 1759–1764 family letters from Glasgow, a 1731 Scottish family Bible, a 1738 Gaelic hymnbook bought in Mull, and the 1859 manuscript recollections of Colonel Francis McLean of Vernon and Reverend Allen McLean of Simsbury, this volume bridges over seven centuries of West Highland clan history with six generations of American pioneer records.

Historical & Regional Overview
The first three chapters provide a rich genealogical chronicle of Clan MacLean (Clan Gillean) across the islands of Mull, Coll, Tiree, Islay, and Iona, as well as Morvern and Lochaber in Argyllshire. It traces twenty-five Chiefs of Duart from Old Dougall of Scone (c. 1100) and Gilleain of the Battle-Axe (c. 1250) through Red Hector of the Battles (slain at Harlaw, 1411), Hector Odhar (slain at Flodden, 1513), Sir Lachlan Mór (slain on Islay, 1598), and the Royalist Baronets of Nova Scotia who fought at Inverkeithing (1651), Killiecrankie (1689), Sheriffmuir (1715), and Culloden (1746). The lineage then follows the sixteen Lairds of Coll at Breachacha Castle and the cadet house of the MacLeans of Drimnacross and Grishipoll—anchored by Allan MacLean of Grishipoll and his wife Catherine MacLean of Balliphetrish (born 1668, living at age 96 in 1764).
The American chapters document the emigration of Dr. Neil MacLean (1702–1784) to Hartford in 1736 and his brother Lieutenant Allan MacLean (1715–1786), who sailed from Newport, Glasgow on July 22, 1740, landed at Boston on September 17, 1740, served five years at Stillwater, New York during the French and Indian War in Colonel Carlisle's Regiment, and settled in Hartford, Bolton, and Vernon, Connecticut. Exhaustive vital records trace the descendants of Allan MacLean and Mary Loomis through Captain Alexander McLean (1747–1806) and Johannah Smith across East Windsor, Manchester, Talcottville, Rockville, and Simsbury, Connecticut, as well as migrations to New York, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and California—including Rockville industrial founder Colonel Francis McLean, novelist Sally Pratt McLean Greene, University of California President William Thomas Reid, University of Iowa President George Edwin McLean, and Connecticut Governor George Payne McLean.
