The Clan Bain crest is a potent symbol of Scottish heritage, balancing themes of marital prowess with intellectual mastery. The central image is a standard dexter (right) arm, its hand firmly gripping a dagger, or proper. This figure embodies readiness, bravery, and a commitment to defend one's family and honor. In Scottish heraldry, the dagger frequently signifies a warrior’s resolve and military strength.
This theme is further amplified by the motto displayed in the upper banner: “Et Marte Et Arte.” Traditionally translated from Latin as “By Force and Skill” (or “By Strength and Art”), it serves as the clan’s guiding principle. This phrase symbolizes a duality: the Bain family’s historic prowess in battle—evoked by Mars, the god of war—alongside their mastery of art, commerce, and skilled vocations.
The crest is enclosed within a circular strap and buckle, a characteristic structure of a Scottish Clan Crest Badge. While the full coat of arms belongs solely to the Chief, this badge allows clansmen and followers to show their allegiance. At the very bottom, two crosses pattee are carved into the belt, representing faith and perhaps historical Christian alliances that shaped the clan’s journey. The name “Clan Bain” itself is derived from the Gaelic “Bàn,” meaning “fair” or “white-haired,” denoting their origin.
