This circular, detailed badge represents the official clan badge of Clan Burnett, enclosed within a traditional Scottish "belt and buckle" frame that signifies the wearer is a member of the clan and owes allegiance to its chief. The artwork, resembling an aged woodcut or engraving on parchment, is rich in symbolism.
The central element is a grapevine, a classic heraldic and artistic symbol representing fertility, abundance, community, and peace. It features a sturdy central stem, twisting tendrils, broad green leaves, and two distinct clusters of deep purple grapes. However, the crest’s primary meaning is revealed by a close inspection of the vine’s base. From a visible cut in the stem, a human hand emerges, gripping a small, upright dagger. This dagger is not depicted as a weapon of attack, but rather as a tool actively pruning the vine.
This purposeful "wounding" of the plant is explained by the accompanying Latin motto on the upper scroll: VIRESCIT VULNERE VIRTUS. This phrase translates to "Courage flourishes at a wound" or "Virtue grows stronger by a wound." Collectively, the crest is a powerful symbol of resilience, perseverance, and growth through adversity. It teaches that just as a grapevine must be pruned (wounded) to produce its best and most fruitful harvest, so too does a person, a family, or a clan gain strength, character, and greater virtue by enduring and overcoming struggle and misfortune.
