This is the crest badge of Clan Campbell, historically one of the largest and most powerful Highland clans in Scotland. It features two crucial components that embody the clan's identity and history: the central image and the surrounding motto.
The central figure is a boar’s head, usually depicted in heraldry as "erased," meaning it has been jaggedly torn from the body. The boar is a traditional symbol of courage, tenacity, and fierce strength. In Scottish folklore, it was a dreaded beast, and slaying one was the ultimate proof of bravery. The boar holds deeper mythological significance for the Campbells, who were historically known as Clann Diarmaid (the race of Diarmid). They claimed descent from the legendary Celtic hero Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, who famously killed a ferocious, venomous wild boar.
The motto, written in Latin on the upper scroll, is “Ne Obliviscaris,” which translates to “Forget Not.” This is a powerful, dual-purpose pledge. It serves as an internal reminder to clan members to honor their ancestors, their history, and their obligations. Simultaneously, it is a stern warning to their enemies that the Campbells do not forget slights or injuries. The entire design is enclosed within a circular strap and buckle, which signifies loyalty to the clan chief.
