This crest is the official clan crest badge of Clan Carnegie, a prominent Scottish family. Traditionally, such badges are worn by members to show allegiance to their clan chief. The image is rich in heraldic symbolism, contained within a circular belt, or strap and buckle, which denotes that the wearer is a "clan member" and not the chief himself.

At the top, on a scroll, is the clan’s motto: "DRED GOD" (historically "DREAD GOD"). In old Scots, "dread" did not mean to live in terror, but rather to hold in profound awe and reverence, signifying the clan's piety and ultimate allegiance to divine law over earthly powers.

The central image, resting on a wreath of the clan colors, is the crest of the Chief of Carnegie, the Earl of Southesk. It is described in heraldry as a "thunderbolt winged." This striking device features a central column, which some interpret as a representation of a multi-armed or serpent-like form, flanked by wings and emitting flames or lightning bolts. This powerful symbol represents swiftness, strength, and divine authority. As a whole, the crest represents a commitment to faith, heritage, and the shared identity of Clan Carnegie.
