This iconic crest belongs to Clan Chisholm, a proud and ancient Scottish family with roots dating back to the 13th century, initially in the Borders and later as a powerful Highland clan in Strathglass. The image is a classic example of a Scottish clan crest badge, worn by clansmen to show allegiance to their chief.
The central motif—a dexter (right) hand couped at the wrist, holding a dagger erect, its point transfixing a boar’s head erased—represents a defining moment in the clan’s legendary history. According to tradition, two Chisholm brothers saved the life of a Scottish King (often identified as Alexander III) from an attack by a ferocious wild boar while hunting. The hand and dagger symbolize the brave and decisive action that slew the beast.
Above the central image, on a curving scroll, is the clan’s motto: “Feros Ferio.” This Latin phrase translates to “I am fierce with the fierce” or “I strike the fierce one.” It perfectly encapsulates the martial spirit, courage, and resilience that the Chisholms were renowned for throughout centuries of Highland history, from the Battle of Bannockburn to the Jacobite Risings.
