This detailed line illustration displays the authentic Scottish Clan Crest Badge of Clan Gow. At its core sits a fierce, snarling wildcat (a “cat-a-mountain”), sejant with a raised paw, atop a crest wreath. This wildcat is the primary symbol of the greater Clan Chattan confederation, a massive alliance of Highland clans of which the Gows are historically a part. "Gow" itself is derived from the Gaelic word for "smith" (gobha), signifying their heritage as skilled artisans and fierce warriors. The wildcat represents independence, ready defiance, and a dangerous nature when provoked.
Encircling the wildcat is a detailed buckled leather strap, which, in heraldry, marks this as a badge intended for wear by followers and kinsmen, symbolizing binding allegiance to their clan chief. The upper scroll bears the famous and archaic motto: “TOUCH NOT THE CAT BUT A GLOVE.” In this context, "but" (from archaic "bot") means "without." The motto is a direct warning to enemies: do not attempt to lay hands on the "cat" (the clan) without protective gloves—meaning, do not provoke the clan unless you have prepared proper defenses, as you will be mauled.
