Trace Your Clan Mackay Ancestors Across Sutherland, Scotland, and the Global Diaspora in the Rare 1924 Roll of Honour

Originally compiled and privately published in Glasgow in 1924 by the Clan Mackay Society under Honorary Secretary David Norman Mackay, the Clan Mackay Society War Memorial Volume is one of the scarcest and most genealogically rich single-clan military registers ever printed. Documenting more than 1,100 fallen men and women bearing the name of Mackay (across all orthographies: Mackay, MacKay, McKay, and M'Kay) alongside over 550 decorated clansmen who served in the Great War of 1914–1918, this volume acts as a vital early-20th-century census and migration bridge. Because the British Army rolls systematically record both the soldier's Parish or Town of Birth (b) and Town of Enlistment (e), researchers can trace exact family migration paths from ancestral crofts in Dùthaich Mhic Aoidh (the Reay Country of northwestern Sutherland), Caithness, Ross-shire, and the Isle of Lewis to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States.

Historical & Regional Overview

For centuries, Clan Mackay (Clann Mhic Aoidh, motto Manu Forti—“With a Strong Hand”) held the rugged northern territories of Dùthaich Mhic Aoidh (the Reay Country), stretching across the parishes of Tongue, Farr, Bettyhill, Melvich, Skerray, Strathy, Durness, and Eddrachillis in northwestern Sutherland, as well as neighbouring estates in eastern Sutherland (Dornoch, Golspie, Brora, Lairg, Rogart, and Loth), Caithness (Thurso, Halkirk, Watten, Wick, Bower, Latheron, and Reay), Ross-shire (Dingwall, Tain, Urray, Nigg, Rosskeen, Contin, and Fodderty), and the Outer Hebrides (Barvas, Lochs, Uig, Stornoway, Harris, and South Uist). Following the nineteenth-century Highland Clearances and industrial expansion, thousands of Mackay families relocated to the Clyde and Forth valleys or emigrated across the British Empire and North America. When war broke out in 1914, clansmen answered the call in extraordinary numbers across the Royal Naval Reserve, the Seaforth Highlanders, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, the Gordon Highlanders, the Black Watch, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the Royal Scots, the Highland Light Infantry, and the expeditionary forces of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, and the United States.

Genealogists prize this volume for two unique features rarely found together in a single source: first, the pairing of exact birth parishes (b) with enlistment towns (e), which reveals where a Highland family had settled by 1914; and second, the preservation of traditional Scottish middle names. Under Scottish naming patterns, a child's middle name was frequently the maiden surname of their mother or grandmother. Entries such as Murdoch M'Kenzie MacKay, William Pringle MacKay, Jas. M'Farlane MacKay, Alex. Shearer McKay, Jas. MacDonald Cathcart MacKay, Sinclair Munroe MacKay, Amos Rintoul MacKay, and Matron C. A. Tait Mackay preserve more than 125 maternal and allied family surnames directly within the roll, offering immediate breakthroughs when cross-referenced with Scotland's Statutory Registers, Old Parish Registers (OPRs), and Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) next-of-kin records.
