This intricate heraldic emblem is a circular clan crest badge, a traditional form used in Scotland to display lineage and allegiance. The entire structure is contained within a detailed representation of a leather belt, a 'strap and buckle,' which is a canonical symbol in Scottish heraldry denoting the wearer is a follower and owes loyalty to the clan chief. This belt features a prominent buckle on the left, complete with its prongs and loop, and a series of metal studs, many in the form of Maltese-style crosses, set along its length.
Above the main circular frame, a flowing banner holds the clan's motto, 'FORTITUDINE.' This Latin phrase, translating to 'With Fortitude' or 'By Bravery,' is a constant exhortation to endurance, resilience, and moral strength. Below the frame, a corresponding banner clearly identifies 'CLAN MACRAE.'
At the central focus, resting upon a twisted wreath, is the powerful crest: a hand firmly holding a sharp dagger. This device is the individual crest of the Chief of MacRae. The torse, a wreath of twisted cloth, supports the hand, which grips the weapon with determined strength. The hand and dagger symbolize readiness, martial skill, and vigilance, a fitting emblem for a clan historically known as the 'watchmen' and 'bodyguards' of the Earls of Seaforth. Together, these elements form a unified declaration of proud history, personal courage, and unwavering clan loyalty.
