Trace Your Scottish Highland Ancestors Across the Sixteen Septs & Allied Families of the Clan Chattan Confederation

First published in Glasgow in 1898 at the request of the Clan Chattan Association by the celebrated Highland antiquarian and parliamentarian Charles Fraser-Mackintosh of Drummond, LL.D., F.S.A. Scot. (1828–1901), An Account of the Confederation of Clan Chattan; Its Kith and Kin (also titled Minor Septs of Clan Chattan) is the definitive primary-source history of the families who marched under the banner of the Captain of Clan Chattan. Drawing directly from private charter chests, sasines, feu contracts, wadset rights, marriage settlements, and estate rent rolls across Inverness-shire, Nairnshire, Moray, Aberdeenshire, and Perthshire, this volume bridges the notorious gaps in 16th- to 19th-century Scottish Highland parish registers.

Historical & Regional Overview

Unlike single-surname clans, the Confederation of Clan Chattan united two distinct groups under the leadership of the Chief of Mackintosh: blood-related cadets descended from the Chief's own house (Fuil 'ic an Toisich, including the Shaws of Rothiemurchus and Tordarroch, the Farquharsons of Braemar and Deeside, the Mackintoshes of Dalmunzie, the MacOmies of Glenshee, and the Toshachs of Monzievaird and Glentilt) and associated tribes who voluntarily took protection and manrent from the 13th to the 16th centuries. Fraser-Mackintosh provides generation-by-generation pedigrees of the MacGillivrays of Dunmaglass, Dalcrombie, Aberchalder, and Lairgs; the Macbeans (Clan Vean) of Kinchyle, Drummond, Daars, Faillie, and Tomatin; the Macphails (MacFalls) of Inverairnie; and the Macqueens (Clan Revan) of Corrybrough, Pollochaig, Clune, and Strathnoon.

Subsequent chapters trace the Shaws (Clan Ay) of Rothiemurchus, Tordarroch, Dell, Dalnavert, Kinrara, Crathinard, and the Black Isle (where they used the surname M'Ay or Mackay); the Clarks (Clan Chlerich) and their kinship with the learned Irish O'Clerys; the Gows / Smiths (Sliochd a' Ghobha Chrom), followers of Henry of the Wynd from the 1396 battle on the North Inch of Perth; the Davidsons (Clan Dhai) of Invernahaven, Cantray, and Tulloch; the Macleans of the North (Clan Thearlaich) of Urquhart and Dochgarroch; the Macintyres of Badenoch (Clan an t-Saoir); the Clan Tarrill; the MacAndrews (Clan Gillandrish); the minor septs of Vic Gories, Clan Dhu of Strathnairn, Sliochd Gillie Vor Mac Aonas, and Clan Finlay Cheir; the Farquharsons (Clan Fionlay) of Invercauld, Inverey, Monaltrie, Whitehouse, Haughton, Allargue, Breda, and Finzean; and the "Kith and Kin" families of Cattanach, Crerar, Gillespie, Gillies, Noble, MacHardy, MacOmie, Toshach, and MacGlashan.
