Definitive 1895 Archival Proof of the Hereditary Chiefship, Septs, Royal Charters & Pedigrees of Clan MacLean (Clann-Ghilleain)

Originally printed in Glasgow in August 1895 by Maclure, MacDonald & Co., Ornamental Printers to the Queen, Professor John Patterson MacLean's An Examination into the Evidences of the Chiefship of Clann-Ghilleain is one of the rarest and most intensely documented primary source monographs ever published on Clan MacLean (Clann-Ghilleain). Written as a sequel to the author's landmark History of the Clan MacLean (1889) and dedicated to Colonel Sir Fitzroy Donald MacLean, 10th Baronet of Duart, Morvern, and Brolas, this volume marshals medieval Gaelic manuscripts, Privy Council registers, Great Seal precepts, and Acts of the Parliaments of Scotland to prove the seniority of the House of Duart over the House of Lochbuy and map the exact genealogical relationships among the principal MacLean cadet branches.

Historical & Regional Overview

In January 1895, when John MacLean, Vice-President of the Clan MacLean Association in Glasgow, invited Murdoch Gillian Maclaine of Lochbuy to become a member and permit the Lochbuy coat-of-arms to appear alongside other cadet bearings on the Association's diploma, Lochbuy refused—signing himself "Maclaine of Lochbuie, Chief of the Clan" and claiming descent from an elder brother of the Duart line. Drawing on his personal inspection of every charter in the charter-room of Lochbuy House and the ancient stone vaults at Laggan Burying Ground on the Isle of Mull in June and July 1887, Professor J. P. MacLean—supported by Gaelic scholar Rev. Alexander MacLean-Sinclair in the Glasgow Herald—systematically dismantled the claims of Lochbuy and his pseudonymous advocate "Historicus" in the Glasgow Herald and Oban Times.

For genealogists researching ancestors in the Isle of Mull, Morvern, Ardgour, Coll, Tiree, Kingerloch, Muck, Borreray, Urquhart, Dochgarroch, and Strathglass (Kilmorack and Kiltarlity), this work is packed with primary genealogical proofs. It reproduces the ancient Gaelic pedigree of Lachlan Lubanach (5th Chief and 1st of Duart, eldest son of John Dubh) from the Manuscript of 1450 and Manuscript of 1467 edited by Historiographer Royal Dr. William Forbes Skene; cites the October 1496 legitimation of Lauchlan M'Gilleon in the Registrum Secreti Sigilli (vol. i, fol. 29); proves from the Ardgour MS. and a 1780 Kingerloch charter-room letter that Charles of Ardmeanan (founder of the House of Urquhart) was actually the eldest son of Hector Reaganach; and documents Clan MacLean's hereditary command at Harlaw (1411), Inverlochy (1431 & 1645), Bloody Bay (1482), Flodden (1513), Glenlivat (1594), Inverkeithing (1651), Knockbreck & Killiecrankie (1689), and Sheriffmuir (1715).
