Break through Ireland’s pre-1864 genealogical brick wall with one of the rarest Georgian marriage registers ever printed. Originally issued in London in 1897 by Phillimore & Co. in a strictly limited subscriber edition of only 75 numbered copies, Henry Farrar’s Irish Marriages, Being an Index to the Marriages in Walker’s Hibernian Magazine, 1771 to 1812 (Vol. I: A to J) is an indispensable primary substitute for the Irish parish registers and diocesan marriage bonds lost in the 1922 Four Courts fire in Dublin. This restored Fairbairn’s Crests Complete Digital Research Edition strips away all 225 blank verso leaves from the archival scan, restores and typesets the missing final 20 pages of Volume I (Printed Pages 224–243, covering Howe through Julian), embeds a clean every-word searchable text layer across all 267 pages, and appends a newly compiled 18-page Consolidated Alphabetical Surname, County, Dublin Street & Military Index covering 1,798 surnames and all 32 Irish counties.

What’s Inside This Enhanced Fairbairn’s Crests Edition

  • Complete & Restored Volume I Text (267 Total PDF Pages / 243 Printed Pages): Covers bridegrooms and cross-referenced brides from A to J (while naming brides and spouses from A to Z within full marriage entries) between 1771 and 1812, including the newly typeset restoration of Printed Pages 224–243 (Howe, Lady L. C. to Julian, Rev. Chris.).
  • 9,000+ Georgian Marriage Notices & Kinship Links: Preserves exact marriage months/years, bride and groom names, father’s names (eldest daughter, youngest daughter, only daughter, sole heiress), widowed status (relict of), civic occupations, clerical titles, peerage connections, and country seats.
  • Sir Arthur Vicars’ Anthologia Hibernica Appendix (1793–1794): Incorporates notes compiled by Sir Arthur Vicars, F.S.A., Ulster King of Arms, indexing births, marriages, and deaths recorded in the Anthologia Hibernica during 1793 and 1794.
  • Newly Compiled 18-Page Back-of-Book Research Index: Deterministically indexes 1,798 verified A–J headword surnames, all 32 Irish Counties, 63 Georgian Dublin streets, squares, quays & parishes, 50 provincial towns & seats, British Army regiments (1st–105th Foot, Cavalry, Royal Irish Artillery), Irish County Militias & Volunteers, and Royal Navy vessels with exact page numbers.
  • 100% Searchable & Bookmarked PDF + Page Offset Concordance: Every page features an active searchable text layer (Ctrl+F / Cmd+F), nested interactive PDF bookmarks for Letters A through J, and a Researcher’s Guide with verified 18th-century Irish surname spelling variants and exact page offset formulas (PDF Page = Printed Page + 6).

Historical & Genealogical Overview

Between 1771 and 1812—spanning the height of Georgian Dublin, Grattan’s Parliament, the Volunteer movement, the 1798 Rebellion, the Act of Union (1800), and the Napoleonic Wars—Walker’s Hibernian Magazine served as Ireland’s premier monthly periodical of record. Because civil registration of Protestant marriages in Ireland did not begin until 1845 (and universal civil registration not until 1864), and because the 1922 Four Courts disaster destroyed over a thousand Church of Ireland parish registers alongside centuries of prerogative and diocesan marriage licences, contemporary marriage notices published in Dublin periodicals are frequently the sole surviving documentary proof of an 18th- or early 19th-century Irish marriage.

Unlike bare parish register entries that often list only two names and a date, the notices indexed by Henry Farrar routinely bridge two or three generations at once. A single entry frequently identifies the bride’s father, her ancestral townland or Dublin street address (such as Merrion Square, Stephen’s Green, Sackville Street, Grafton Street, Dame Street, or Capel Street), the officiating prelate or clergyman, and the groom’s military commission in a British Army regiment or Irish County Militia stationed at Kinsale, Clonmel, Athlone, Enniskillen, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, or Belfast.
