Unlock Six Centuries of Highland Clan Kinship, Feudal Charters, Bonds of Manrent & Tenant Muster Rolls from the Breadalbane Charter Room (1067–1703)

Privately printed at Edinburgh in 1855 by T. Constable for the Bannatyne Club under the editorial direction of celebrated Scottish legal antiquary Cosmo Innes (1798–1874), The Black Book of Taymouth; With Other Papers from the Breadalbane Charter Room is one of the rarest and most important primary source collections ever published for the Central and Western Highlands of Scotland. Drawn directly from the private muniments of the Campbells of Glenorchy (later Earls and Marquesses of Breadalbane) at Taymouth Castle, this monumental quarto volume preserves nine distinct archival record series spanning Perthshire, Argyll, Breadalbane, Lorne, Glendochart, Glenlyon, Loch Tay, Rannoch, Balquhidder, Strathearn, and Menteith during an era that predates surviving Old Parish Registers (OPRs) by up to two hundred years.

What's Inside This Enhanced Fairbairn's Crests Digital Edition:

  • Complete 517-Page Archival Edition: Includes 4 pages of newly typeset Fairbairn's Crests Front Matter (Pages i–iv), all 489 retained original quarto pages from the 1855 Bannatyne Club edition (with 26 blank flyleaves, library stamp pages, and dark wrapper scans removed), and a newly compiled 24-Page Alphabetical Surname & Place Index at the back of the volume.
  • Preserved Original Archival Pages & 9 Color Lithographed Portraits: Retains the original 1855 archival page backgrounds, red-and-black Gothic blackletter typography, William Forrest's etched frontispiece of Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe and 1619 Holyrood portrait of Sir Duncan Campbell, and all nine full-color lithographed portraits of the Lairds of Glenorchy by W. H. Lizars.
  • I. The Black Book of Taymouth (1598–1648, pp. 1–106): Master William Bowie's famous chronicle of the first nine Lairds of Glenorchy—from Sir Colin Campbell, Knight of Rhodes (1432), and Sir Duncan Campbell (slain at Flodden, 1513) to "Black Duncan of the Cowl" (d. 1631) and Sir Colin the 8th Laird—recording every marriage, child, tocher (dowry) payment, land conquest, castle built, and the blood feud with the proscribed Clan Gregor (including The Genologie of the Clangregour on p. 64).
  • II. The Chronicle of Fortirgall (1093–1579, pp. 107–148): The vital 16th-century obituary register and weather chronicle compiled by James M'Gregor (Dean of Lismore) and the curate of Fortingall, recording exact death dates, Gaelic patronymics, wives, and burial places of hundreds of Highland men and women across Fortingall, Inishail, Finlarig, Weem, Dalmally, Killin, and Dunkeld.
  • III. Duncan Laideus' alias Makgregouris Testament (c. 1552, pp. 149–173): The famous Scots poetic testament of the Highland freebooter Duncan MacGregor ("Duncan Laideus," executed with his sons Gregor and Malcolm Roy in June 1552), complete with a folding manuscript facsimile.
  • IV. The Buke of Bandis of Manrent, Calpis & Fostering (1488–1681, pp. 175–262): Abstracts of 144 original Highland bonds wherein clansmen and whole septs—MacGregors, MacNabs, MacLarens (Clanlaurane), MacIntyres (Clan Teir), MacDougalls, MacCorquodales, MacNaughtons, MacEwens, Menzies, and Stewarts—bound themselves in manrent service, pledged their calp (best beast at death), or signed formal Celtic contracts of child fostering and adoption.
  • V–IX. Rentals (1582, 1594), Household Books (1590–1626), Inventories (1598–1640), Baron Court Books (1621–1642), 1638 Muster Rolls, Feu Charters (1550–1703) & Letters (1570–1651): Homestead-by-homestead tenant rentals, court assize rolls, charters (including the hereditary Dewars' custody of the Coygerach or Quigrich of St. Fillan in Glendochart, 1428–1487), letters from King James VI, Charles I, and painter George Jamesone, and the extraordinary 1638 Rollis of Able Men with their Armis naming every tenant and the exact sword, targe, Lochaber axe, bow, or hakbut he carried.

Historical & Regional Overview

Few surviving Scottish records capture the transition from Celtic patriarchal custom to feudal charter law as vividly as the Breadalbane muniments. In the Bonds of Manrent and Fostering, researchers can witness native Highland families renouncing their old chiefs or binding their posterity to the House of Glenorchy, alongside detailed contracts for fostering the heir of Glenorchy in the house of Duntrone or with native tenants in Breadalbane. In the Chronicle of Fortirgall and the Baron Court Books, the everyday lives, marriages, blood feuds, cattle raids, mill multures, and trials of ordinary Highlanders are recorded with full three- and four-generation Gaelic patronymics (such as Donald M'Cruiter V'Ewin or Katherine Neyn Donyll V'Clawe), allowing family historians to reconstruct multi-generational pedigrees in the 1400s, 1500s, and 1600s.

Equally valuable for social and military historians are the Inventories of Plenishing (listing everything from the Knight of Rhodes' silver-set amulet stone and Queen Anne of Denmark's diamond ring to Lochaber axes, two-handed claymores, and the "heading axe" at Finlarig) and the 1638 Muster Rolls of Able Men across the parishes of Killin, Strathfillan, Inishail (Inchaddin), Dull, Weem, Kenmore, and Glenorchy. With Fairbairn's Crests' newly compiled 24-page Back-of-Book Index and section-by-section page conversion guide, navigating this landmark 517-page volume is effortless.
