Fifteen Stories of Highland Feud and State War
From the mountain passes of Kintail to the walls of Eilean Donan, the battlefields of Jacobite Scotland, and the revolutionary struggle of eighteenth-century North Carolina, The Bloody History of Clan Macrae follows one Highland kindred through nearly three centuries of conflict, loyalty, feud, rebellion, and military service.
This richly illustrated history brings together fifteen dramatic episodes connected with Clan Macrae, beginning with the legendary exploits of Duncan Mòr na Tuagh at the Battle of Park and the famous defence of Eilean Donan in 1539. The story continues through the bitter Glengarry feud, the Lochcarron raid and Kylerhea fight, the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, Jacobite battlefields, government occupation, and the struggle for control of the forfeited Seaforth estates.
Readers will encounter the Macraes at Auldearn, Sheriffmuir, Eilean Donan, Glen Shiel, Glen Affric, and Moore’s Creek Bridge, as well as during the extraordinary 1778 confrontation remembered as the Affair of the Wild Macraes, when armed Highland soldiers occupied Arthur’s Seat near Edinburgh while demanding the fulfilment of their enlistment agreements.
Rather than presenting Clan Macrae as a single unchanging military body, the book follows named individuals, households, ministers, estate officers, soldiers, emigrants, and families whose loyalties sometimes changed with circumstance. Macraes appear on opposing sides during the rising of 1745–1746, while later migration carries part of the story across the Atlantic into the American Revolution.
The famous stronghold of Eilean Donan Castle runs through the history as both symbol and battlefield. Readers see it defended against Donald Gorm MacDonald in 1539, occupied during seventeenth-century political turmoil, and bombarded and deliberately demolished by British naval forces during the Jacobite rising of 1719.
Alongside these larger events are the personal stories that give clan history its human scale: feuding foresters, murdered relatives, men lost at Sheriffmuir, ministers whose property was seized during military campaigns, soldiers divided by political allegiance, and Highland emigrants forced to choose sides in a new war thousands of miles from Kintail.
Illustrative historical reconstructions throughout the book help bring castles, Highland landscapes, soldiers, raids, sea fights, and battlefields to life while complementing the detailed narrative.
The book also takes care to distinguish documented events from later clan tradition. Famous stories such as Duncan Mòr’s battle-axe, the last arrow fired at Donald Gorm, dramatic casualty traditions, and accounts of individual heroism are presented alongside discussion of what the surviving historical evidence can actually establish.
