Unlock Rare 1879 Inverness Clan Pedigrees, Jacobite Charters & Highland Family Histories

Originally published in Inverness in 1879 and conducted by the celebrated Highland historian and genealogist Alexander Mackenzie, F.S.A. Scot. (the "Clachnacuddin Seer" and author of the monumental histories of the Mackenzies, Macdonalds, Frasers, Camerons, and Chisholms), The Celtic Magazine: Volume IV (Nos. XXXVII–XLVIII, November 1878 – October 1879) is an indispensable primary source for anyone tracing ancestors across Ross-shire, Inverness-shire, Sutherland, Argyll, Perthshire, and the Hebrides. Spanning twelve monthly issues, this volume preserves verbatim family pedigrees, sasines, marriage contracts, Crown charters, and oral traditions gathered directly from Highland charter chests and living nineteenth-century Gaelic tradition-bearers.

Historical & Regional Overview

During the late 1870s, Inverness was the intellectual capital of the Gaelic Revival, and Alexander Mackenzie's Celtic Magazine served as the premier forum where clan historians, antiquarians, and diaspora researchers in Canada, Australia, and the United States exchanged charter evidence and genealogical proofs. Volume IV is particularly prized by family historians because it bridges the gap between medieval baronial charters and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century parish registers—documenting cadet younger sons, tacksmen, Jacobite officers of the '15 and '45, British military regiments (such as the 78th Ross-shire Buffs / Seaforth Highlanders), and Highland emigrants to Nova Scotia, Pictou, and Ontario.

In addition to its genealogical pedigrees, this volume captures the social and cultural fabric of the Highlands: from the 1878–1879 Directory of Office-Bearers of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, the Glasgow Highland Association, the London Highland Camanachd Club, and the Glasgow Perthshire Association, to Professor John Stuart Blackie's address on the social economy of the Highlands, the collapse of the Caledonian Bank, and the heraldic clan windows of the Inverness New Town Hall.
