Originally published in Inverness in 1888 under the editorship of the renowned Highland philologist and historian Alexander Macbain, M.A., F.S.A. Scot., Volume XIII (comprising monthly issues Nos. CXLV to CLVI, November 1887 – October 1888) represents the landmark concluding volume of The Celtic Magazine. For genealogists and family historians researching ancestors across the Isle of Skye, Lewis, Harris, Raasay, Mull, Tiree, Wester Ross, Lochaber, Badenoch, Rannoch, Sutherland, and Caithness, this 572-page historical compendium preserves primary charter transcriptions, cadet family genealogies, pre-1855 churchyard inscriptions, and 18th-century estate tenant rolls that bridge critical gaps in surviving Scottish parish registers.

Historical & Regional Overview

Volume XIII brings together seven major genealogical and territorial monographs written by Scotland's foremost 19th-century antiquarians. In a seven-part serial spanning over seventy pages, clan historian Alexander Mackenzie, F.S.A. Scot. delivers key chapters of The History of the Macleods (pp. 29, 59, 97, 145, 193, 241, 545), documenting the downfall of the old Macleods of Lewis (Torquil Conner, Torquil Dubh, Neil Macleod, and the Fife Adventurers at Stornoway), the rise of the Mackenzies in Lewis, and detailed cadet genealogies of the Macleods of Raasay, Assynt, Gairloch, Cadboll, Talisker, Bernera, and Harris/Dunvegan. Alongside it, Rev. A. Maclean Sinclair contributes his four-part Origin and Sketches of the Clan Maclean (pp. 250, 297, 439, 498), tracing the lineage of Gilleoin of the Aird through the chieftains of Duart, Lochbuie, Coll, Ardgour, Dochgarroch, Kingerloch, and Brolas down to the Battle of Inverkeithing (1651). In The Macgregors of Rannoch (pp. 175, 219) and The Tragedy of Clach-nan-Ceann, Dr. R. W. D. Cameron chronicles the proscribed Clan Gregor in Brae Rannoch and their 16th- to 18th-century struggles with the Menzies barons and Campbell earls.

For researchers tracing families in Inverness-shire and the Far North, Charles Fraser-Mackintosh, M.P. transcribes 17th-century wadsets and charters in The Gilliechattan Lands in Lochaber, 1633–1663 (pp. 465–472), illuminating land transfers among the Marquises of Argyll, the Mackintoshes of Torcastle, the Camerons of Lochiel, and the MacGillonies of Strone across Glenlui and Locharkaig. In Badenoch, Alexander Macpherson records pre-registration monumental inscriptions and kirk history in The Old Church and Church-yard of Kingussie (St. Columba's) (pp. 49–58). Moving north to Caithness and Mackay Country, Thomas Sinclair, M.A. presents a four-part transcription of Thomas Pilkington's and the Innes family's estate ledgers in A Highland Estate [Sandside, Parish of Reay], 1792–1800 (pp. 289, 343, 394, 450), naming scores of local tenants, tacksmen, fishermen, and Reay/Caithness Fencible soldiers, complemented by George M. Sutherland's study of George, Fifth Earl of Caithness, of the Sinclair Line (pp. 16, 253), 17th-century bonds from Lord Macdonald's Charter Chest (p. 139), and Rev. John Kennedy's biographical studies of Gaelic poets Alexander Macdonald (Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair), Duncan Ban Macintyre, and Rob Donn Mackay.
