Trace Your Bain, Bayne, Mackay, MacPhail & Polson Ancestors Across Caithness, Ross-shire, Haddingtonshire, and the Scottish Diaspora
Originally published in Inverness in July 1963 by Major Alfred John Lawrence of Montreal, The Clan Bain with Its Ancestral and Related Scottish Clans is one of the scarcest and most comprehensive genealogical monographs ever compiled on the families of Bain, Bayne, Bane, Bene, Mackay, Morgan, MacPhail, and Polson. Spanning fifty-seven numbered generations and illustrated with 15 full-page genealogical pedigree charts, this landmark work bridges the notorious eighteenth- and nineteenth-century parish register gaps of Northern Scotland—connecting modern families in Scotland, Canada, the United States, England, Australia, and New Zealand directly to the Bayne Lairds of Tulloch Castle, the Mackays of Strathnaver, the Earls of Moray and Ross, and the ancient kings of Dal Riada and Alba.

Historical & Regional Overview
In Part I (Chapters I–V), Major Lawrence reconstructs the shared royal and clan heritage uniting the Clans Lorn, Macnachtan, Macneil, Morgan, Murray, and Mackay. Tracing the Dalriadic settlement of Argyll under Lorn Mor and Fergus Mor MacEarca (ca. 474 A.D.) and the union of the Picts and Scots under Kenneth MacAlpin (843 A.D.), the narrative follows the Mormaors of Moray and Ross (including Finlay MacRory, Macbeth, Gruoch, and King Lulach) to Lulach's daughter and her husband Aed (Eth), 1st Earl of Moray. From their descendants—Angus MacEth (2nd Earl of Moray) and Malcolm MacEth (1st Earl of Ross)—sprang Iye Mor MacEth of Strathnaver and his son Donald MacIye (b. ca. 1265), first Chief to bear the surname Mackay. After the murder of Chief Iye Mackay and his son Donald at Dingwall Castle in 1370 and the fierce clan conflict culminating in the Battle of Drum-nan-Coup (1433), the three sons of Neil Neilson Mackay dispersed: Paul founded the Siol-Phail, MacPhails, and Polsons; Angus founded the Siol-Angus; and John "Ban" (Bane) Mackay (b. ca. 1408) fled with his mother to Olrig in Caithness around 1435, where his Gaelic byname ("the Fair") became the hereditary family surname Bane, Bene, Bayne, and Bain.
In Part II (Chapters VI–X), the volume traces the descendants of John Bane Mackay's sons across Scotland and overseas through eleven lettered lineages: Line "J" in Olrig, Thurso, Bower, Watten, Clyth, and Bilbster (including centenarian Wick antique dealer Barbara Bain); Line "K" in Fifeshire, Musselburgh, Longniddry, Seton, Dunfermline, Dysart, St. Andrews, and Morriston; Lines "L", "M", "N", and "P" across Freswick, Canisbay, Keiss, Auckingill, Lybster, Quoylach, Thrumster, Harland, Mireland, Wetherslet, and Backlass Hill (including Alexander Bain, 1810–1877, celebrated inventor of the electric clock and electro-magnetic printing telegraph); and Lines "R", "S", "T", "U", and "V" in Ross-shire, documenting the nine Bayne Lairds of Tulloch Castle (1542–1762), Sir Donald Bayne of Tulloch (knighted 1680, M.P. and Provost of Dingwall), the fierce Alastair Mor Ban, the 1649 Covenant Oath trials at Inverness, the Baynes of Knockbain, Delny, Priesthill, and Tarradale, the Bains of Dochcarty, and the 19th- and 20th-century descendants of Donald Bain (1808–1858) and Helen Green across Wick, Edinburgh, Leeds, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Victoria, and the United States.
