Break Through Late 17th-Century Argyllshire & Highland Brick Walls (1693–1702)

For researchers tracing ancestors across Argyllshire, the Inner Hebrides, and Lochaber, the late seventeenth century is one of the most challenging eras in Scottish genealogy—because almost no Old Parish Registers (OPRs) of baptisms, marriages, or burials survive prior to the 1720s or 1750s. Edited in 1909 by Francis J. Grant, W.S., Rothesay Herald, for the Scottish Record Society (Part XLIV), The Commissariot of Argyll: Register of Inventories, 1693–1702 abstracts ten manuscript volumes of estate inventories compiled between 10 July 1693 and 27 November 1702 (recording deaths dating back to the 1680s) to fill a major gap in the Argyll Register of Testaments.

During this decade, the Commissary of Argyll conducted an exhaustive judicial perambulation visiting every mainland and island parish in his district. Because no estate was too small to escape contributing its quota to the Commissary's court fees, this register captures ordinary tenant farmers, tacksmen, cottars, walkmillers, smiths, merchants, and harpers—recording each defunct's farm or clachan, parish, month and year of death, surviving spouse or widow (relict), and the names of lawful children, brothers, sisters, grandchildren (oyes), marriage contract dates, and fosterage agreements (contracts of mackabe and fosterage).

  • Complete Masculine (M') & Feminine (N') Gaelic Patronymic Indexing: Seventeen pages of the original register (pp. 37–47) index deceased Highland wives and widows under their maiden feminine patronymic prefix N' (from Gaelic Nic, "daughter of"—such as N'Arthur, N'Callum, N'Dugald, N'Lauchlan, and N'Tavish). Our new back-of-book index cross-references both Mac/M' and N' forms so you never miss a female ancestor.

Historical & Regional Overview

Spanning the turbulent years immediately following the Revolution of 1688–1689, the restoration of the Earldom of Argyll (including the 1685 inventory of Archibald, 9th Earl of Argyll), and the aftermath of the 1692 Glencoe era, these inventories document thousands of interconnected Highland family members across Cowal, Dunoon, Glendaruel, Strachur, Strathlachlan, Glassary, Knapdale, Kintyre, Campbeltown, Craignish, Lorn, Lochaweside, Appin, Lismore, Luing, Seil, Kerrera, Islay (Kildalton), Morvern, Sunart, Ardgour, Kingairloch, Ardnamurchan, and Moidart.

In addition to the main alphabetical register (pp. 1–49), the volume's three-page Appendix (pp. 50–52) preserves court rolls of parishioners summoned between 1697 and 1702 in the parishes of Kilberry/Knapdale, Kilfinan, Dunoon, Inverchaolain, and Kilchrenan to account for the estates of deceased fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, and brothers—providing direct proof of kinship found in no other surviving Scottish record.
