15 Stories of Ancestral Ghosts, Curses, Legends, and Prophecy

Enter Mackay Country, where a chief loses his shadow, phantom music echoes through caves, and strange creatures wait beneath the waters.

Beyond the battles and bloodlines of Clan Mackay lies a world of supernatural storytelling. The Dark Lore of Clan Mackay takes you into the glens of Strathnaver, the shores of Durness, and the remote landscapes of Sutherland through fifteen atmospheric tales of ghosts, witchcraft, prophecy, and ancestral belief.

Meet the shadowless Lord Reay and explore the legend of his education at the mysterious Black School. Approach the water horse of Loch Hope, follow the phantom piper into Smoo Cave, and discover the mermaid traditions of Sandwood Bay. From eerie corpse candles at Farr to the White Banner of the Mackays, each chapter opens another door into the clan’s darker lore.

Inside this collection, discover:

• Haunted places: Castle Varrich, Smoo Cave, and the windswept shores of Mackay Country.
• Supernatural encounters: water horses, changelings, mermaids, and the mournful Caoineag.
• Witchcraft and cunning: the witches of Durness, a trickster’s tomb, and the impossible task of weaving ropes from sand.
• Omens and prophecy: corpse candles, the Brahan Seer, and forewarnings of loss.
• Memory and belonging: stories connecting clan identity, ancestral landscapes, and the sorrow of the Strathnaver Clearances.

These tales explore the fears, hopes, and beliefs woven into Highland folklore. Read as legends and supernatural traditions, they offer an evocative journey through the ways people imagined danger, explained misfortune, and remembered their homeland.

Ideal for readers with Mackay ancestry, lovers of Scottish ghost stories, and anyone drawn to Celtic folklore and the mysteries of the northern Highlands. Whether you are exploring your roots or seeking an atmospheric read, this collection brings the storytelling world of Mackay Country closer.
