Historical Overview: Post-WWI Dundee & Tayside in 1922–1923

Few periods in Scottish urban history were as turbulent or transformative as the years 1920–1923 in Dundee. Home to 168,217 residents at the 1921 Census, "Juteopolis" was navigating the aftermath of the Great War, an unprecedented global textile slump, and the historic September 1920 amalgamation of its legendary family jute empires—Cox Brothers of Lochee, Gilroy, Grimond, Bell, Sandeman, and Walker—into Jute Industries Ltd. At the same time, the city was expanding outward with pioneering garden-suburb housing estates at Logie, Stirling Park, Hospital Park, and Taybank, opening the gift of Caird Park, and launching the Eumaeus from the Caledon Shipyard.

Because statutory Scottish census records after 1921 remain closed to the public, city and county directories from the 1920s are the single richest primary source for tracing parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents between the wars. Whether your family worked in the flax and jute mills of Lochee and Stobswell, sailed aboard the steamers of the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Company, practiced law in Reform Street, or farmed in the Carse of Gowrie and Braes of Angus, this volume places them at an exact street address and occupation in 1922–1923.
