Yet prestige could not protect the family from mounting financial pressures. In 1740, Sir John Houstoun was forced to sell the ancestral estate that had defined the family for centuries.

That loss did not end the Houston story—it transformed it.

The hereditary title eventually passed across the Atlantic to Patrick Houstoun of Savannah, Georgia, connecting the old Renfrewshire family with colonial America. The book explores the Georgia Houstouns, their involvement in colonial government and Revolutionary-era politics, and the wider migration of Houston families through Ulster, North America, and beyond.

The famous Sam Houston also enters the story, but with an important examination of the difference between documented genealogy and later family tradition.
