Uncover Six Centuries of Scottish Highland & Hebridean Clan Warfare, Blood Feuds, Marriage Alliances & Ancestral Pedigrees (1031–1619)

Tracing Scottish Highland and Island ancestors prior to the mid-1700s is one of the greatest challenges in British genealogy, as Old Parochial Registers in the northern shires and Hebrides rarely survive from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. First printed at Glasgow in 1764 by the celebrated University printers Robert and Andrew Foulis from a manuscript written in the reign of King James VI (compiled ca. 1620 by Sir Robert Gordon of Gordonstoun, Tutor of Sutherland), The History of the Feuds and Conflicts Among the Clans in the Northern Parts of Scotland and in the Western Isles (1031–1619) is an extraordinary primary chronicle that names hundreds of clan chiefs, cadet lairds, tutors, brothers, bastard sons, marriage alliances, and hostages (pledges) across thirty historic conflicts.

Historical & Regional Overview

Spanning the reign of King Malcolm II in 1031 through the pacification of the Borders and Isles under King James VI in 1619–1620, this volume preserves firsthand traditions of the great northern and western kindreds. In Sutherland, Caithness (Catteyness), Strathnaver, Assynt, and Ross-shire, it chronicles the battles of Drumilea (1031), Enbo (1259), Bealach nam Brog (1299), Clachnaharry (1341), Tutim-Tarvach (1406), Harpsdale (1426), Druim na Coub (1427), Blar-na-Pairc (1477), the slaying of the Chieftain of Clan Gunn (The Cruner) by the Keiths in the Chapel of St. Tears (1478), Aldy-charrish (1487 — citing the Fearn Abbey manuscript casualty roll), Torran-Dow (1517), the burning of Dornoch Cathedral (1570), and the protracted wars between the Earls of Sutherland, the Sinclairs of Caithness, and the MacKays of Strathnaver.

In the Northeast, Central Highlands, and Western Isles, the chronicle details the bitter 1571–1572 civil wars between the Gordons and the Forbeses at Tillyangus and Craibstone, the feud between the Earls of Huntly and Moray culminating in the burning of Donibristle (1591/1592) and the Battle of Glenlivet (1594), and the Jesuit conspiracy of the Spanish Blanks (1592–1594). Across Skye, Mull, Islay, Jura, Tiree, Uist, Harris, Raasay, and Lewis, it provides unmatched genealogical detail on the blood feud between the Macdonalds of Sleat and Kintyre and Sir Lauchlan Maclean of Duart (including the 1586 Mullintrea hostage crisis, "Maclean his Nuptials", and the 1598 Battle of Loch Gruinart), the 1601 war between Donald Gorme Macdonald and Sir Rory Macleod of Harris (Seil-Tormot), the 1602 war between Lord Kintail (Clan-Cheinzie) and Glengarry, the 1611 shipboard battle at Raasay, and the dramatic struggle for the Isle of Lewis between the rival sons of old Rory Macleod (Seil-Torquill), the Morrison Brieves (Clan-vic-gill-voir), the Fife Adventurers, and the Mackenzies of Kintail.
